Cultural Coaching for

International Students

Is your child ready for life in the U.S.?

Starting college or work in a new country is exciting. It is also very hard. There are unwritten rules that no school teaches. I help international students learn those rules — so they can succeed and feel confident in the United States of America.

WHY STUDENTS STRUGGLE

Many international students are academically excellent. But they struggle with things that American students learned growing up. This affects their grades, their friendships, and their happiness.

In the classroom

How to talk to professors. How to participate in class discussions. How to work on group projects. These are different in America.

Making friends

American students make friends differently than students in Asia. Without guidance, international students often feel lonely and isolated.

At work and internships

How to speak up in meetings. How to network. How to ask for what you need. These are essential for career success in America.

Everyday life

Banking. Healthcare. Renting an apartment. Traveling within the U.S. There are many small things that can feel confusing and stressful.

FOUNDER, RISING TIGER COACHING

I grew up in a Vietnamese-Chinese immigrant family in the United States. I watched my parents work hard to understand American culture — the customs, the expectations, the unwritten rules that no one explained to them.

That experience taught me how difficult it is to build a life in a new country. It also taught me that the right support makes everything easier.

I earned a merit scholarship to college and graduated cum laude. I studied abroad, so I know what it feels like to be far from home in a foreign country. I then spent 14 years building a successful career as a senior leader in American corporate companies.

I have lived the journey that your student is about to begin. I built Rising Tiger Coaching because every international student deserves someone in their corner who truly understands both worlds.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

Grace L.

“I was very nervous to move to Illinois from Pohang. I wanted to fit into American culture, but what I saw on TV did not prepare me to live here. Paulina was my coach for my first year in Illinois. She taught me so much - from simple things to very important things. It felt very comforting to have someone I could ask all of my silly questions to. I would not have survived my first year without Paulina! I recommend her to any student coming to America.”

“Chinese customs and American customs are very different. Paulina helped me understand phrases that Americans like to say, but I had never heard before. She also helped me understand how to do normal things the American way, like order food at a restaurant, ask my teaching assistant for help, and make friends with American students. I felt so comfortable asking questions to Paulina. She is very knowledgeable and nice. I have told all of my Chinese friends about her too.”

“My goal was to get an internship at an American company while I was in the U.S. for graduate school. This was an important experience for me. Paulina helped me prepare for interviews and learn how to be more natural with American co-workers and managers. I was able to ask her for help with questions I did not have anyone else to ask. She has a very successful career in big U.S. companies, so I trusted her very much. My internship went very well and I am thankful to Paulina for supporting me.”
